Driving yourself is the best way to see Jamaica, from Montego Bay beaches to waterfalls and local jerk spots. These practical tips will help you feel ready before you pick up your rental car.
Drive on the left
Traffic in Jamaica drives on the left, with the driver sitting on the right. Take a few minutes in the car park to get used to the controls before you pull out. Our rental cars are automatics, which makes the adjustment easier.
Roundabouts, speed and signs
Give way to traffic already on the roundabout, which comes from your right. Speed limits and distances are shown in kilometres, not miles, and limits are lower in towns than on open roads. Seat belts should be worn by everyone in the car, and you should not use a handheld phone while driving.
Road conditions and night driving
Main roads between Montego Bay, Negril, Falmouth and Ocho Rios are generally good, but expect potholes, speed humps (often called sleeping policemen), pedestrians, and the occasional animal on the road. Rural roads can be narrow and poorly lit, so plan to reach your destination before dark when you can.
Tolls, fuel and navigation
Some highways in Jamaica are tolled, so carry a little cash. Fuel stations are easy to find around towns, but fill up before heading into rural areas. Google Maps and Waze both work well; download offline maps in case signal drops in the hills.
